Countdown to National Mentoring Month!December 2, 2010
January is National Mentoring Month (NMM), which is only 29 days away! This month-long media and outreach campaign focuses on the need for mentors, as well as how each of us—individuals, businesses, government agencies, schools, faith communities and nonprofits—can work together to increase the number of mentors and assure brighter futures for our young people.
The Mentoring Partnership of Minnesota (MPM) is the lead agency for NMM in Minnesota every year. This year’s campaign theme is “Help Them Get There: Be a Mentor.” It will focus heavily on the link between mentoring and academics.
Free, printed recruitment tools are available upon request on a first-come, first-served basis. Click here to see what materials are available, then contact Mindy Twetten, 612-370-9158, to place your order.
In honor of this year’s academically-oriented theme, we’ve put together a free collection of education-related mentoring resources.
Education-Oriented Match Activity from MPM
With research from the University of Minnesota’s College Readiness Consortium and support from GE, MPM developed the K-12 Journey Map to give mentors a structured way to address academics with their mentees. The tool is free, and it is a fun and interactive way to talk about preparing for postsecondary success.
NMM is also a great time to draw attention to the importance of quality practices in mentoring. Validate your program’s quality, pinpoint areas for improvement, and receive individualized technical assistance and evaluation by participating in MPM’s Quality Mentoring Assessment Path (QMAP). Starting in January, programs that have submitted their QMAP will receive special recognition for their commitment to quality on MPM’s Find a Program page.
